Stroke of Unknown Cause Clinic

We are committed to stroke prevention. In up to 30% of stroke or warning stroke (TIA) cases a cause cannot be found. This makes the chance of a second stroke higher.

As stroke specialists we have the expertise and access to the latest diagnostics to help with stroke prevention. We are also involved in clinical trials looking at stroke prevention using novel medications.

To be seen in the stroke of unknown cause clinic a referral from a physician is required.

Clinical Trials

We have access to the latest clinical trials in stroke prevention. If there is a stroke of unknown cause, referral from a physician to the stroke of unknown cause clinic should be completed. At that time consideration for enrollment in a clinical trial can be discussed if eligible.

Cardiac Monitoring in Stroke Prevention

New research completed at the University of Toronto and in the United States has revealed that a number of patients with stroke of unknown cause actually have an irregular heart beat (atrial fibrillation).

Without proper treatment patients with atrial fibrillation and stroke or warning stroke (TIA) have a higher risk of recurrence. At Trillium Brain and Spine we have access to cardiac monitors that can detect atrial fibrillation. All monitors are read by cardiologists with extra training in cardiac electrophysiology. If atrial fibrillation is detected urgent follow up with neurology and cardiology will be arranged. Discussion between cardiology and neurology may occur to optimize patient care.

Please see the link below to find out more about the importance of 30 day cardiac monitoring in selected patients with stroke and TIA.

Concussion and Spine Clinic

We are a unique clinic specializing in the management of head and spine injuries. The clinic is run by a neurologist (Dr Mehdiratta) who has a special interest in stroke and mild traumatic brain injury. Having a neurologist manage the concussion means that medications that help can be prescribed if needed by a brain specialist.

The clinic offers neurological evaluation by neurologists trained in the evaluation and treatment of concussion. Expertise is also provided by neuroradiology and neurosurgery for further evaluation and treatment. We partner with a multi-disciplinary team including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, neuropsychologists and optometrists.

Currently concussion is an evolving area with new research coming out daily.
New treatments include:

  • Treatment for headaches and migraines
  • Treatment for dizziness
  • Treatment for memory loss
  • Treatment for sleep disturbances
  • Treatments for neck and back pain resulting from concussion
  • Treatments for vision problems resulting from concussion

For spine issues, treatments can include medication, physiotherapy and in select cases surgical treatments are offered.
